Tepeilwitl – Feast of the Mountains
Octobet 28th marks the beginning of Tepeilwitl, “feast of the mountains” in the traditional Mexikah calendar.
It is during this time that amaranth dough (tzoalli) would be fashioned into mountains, and placed as offerings. Tamales and tzoalli would be eaten in honor of the mountains and Tlalok. This tradition of making amaranth cakes (Tzoalli) as offerings for ceremonies survives to this day in the tradition of making “Alegrias.”
