You probably wouldn’t be surprised to learn that many schoolchildren in Louisiana are learning that evolution is a lie and creationism is real. What might surprise you is what their Christian curriculum is teaching to prove the theory of creationism – the Loch Ness Monster.

The Loch Ness Monster, or ‘Nessie’ as they call her in Scotland, is similar to other legendary creatures such as Big Foot, the Chupacabra or the Yeti in that there are a number of people who believe with all their hearts that the monster exists, but even in Scotland, Nessie is largely considered to be just a legend.

Among American Christian educators with Accelerated Christian Education (ACE), though, Nessie is alive and well and she is proof that humans and the dinosaurs walked together. From the Scotland Herald:

One ACE textbook – Biology 1099, Accelerated Christian Education Inc – reads: “Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the ‘Loch Ness Monster’ in Scotland? ‘Nessie’ for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.”

Another claim taught is that a Japanese whaling boat once caught a dinosaur. It’s unclear if the movie Godzilla was the inspiration for this lesson.

Jonny Scaramanga, 27, who went through the ACE programme as a child, but now campaigns against Christian fundamentalism, said the Nessie claim was presented as “evidence that evolution couldn’t have happened. The reason for that is they’re saying if Noah’s flood only happened 4000 years ago, which they believe literally happened, then possibly a sea monster survived.

“If it was millions of years ago then that would be ridiculous. That’s their logic. It’s a common thing among creationists to believe in sea monsters.”

Thanks to Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, this type of education is being funded with tax dollars, at least in Louisiana.

Everything about ACE is inimical to responsible education. It serves no purpose except to brainwash children and give parents the feeling that their children are being placed on the way to godliness. It is a travesty of schooling. Any teacher with any dignity or integrity would not put children anywhere near ACE.

I am an ACE survivor. Looking back at classmates, it seems that I am an exception. Ultimately, the needs of the children should come first, and PACEs should be dropped entirely from use in English schools, regardless of their religious status. Schools should not be wilfully harming their students.

In Scotland, they hope to laugh all the way to the bank. Nessie expert Tony Drummond invites Americans to come “see” the monster who most think doesn’t exist.
